Air / Heat Recovery Systems
Heat Recovery and Mechanical Ventilation Systems afford buildings, the opportunity to extract energy from used air including air that is moisture laden kitchens/bathrooms etc and after filtration, is used to heat up fresh air from outside. This means the valuable heat which is normally lost is retained in the building and therefore reducing both heating bills and CO2 emissions.
In Summer, the system in cool mode utilises night air to provide cooled fresh air for a very comfortable night’s sleep so all the benefits of an air conditioning system but occuring more naturally.
Today’s buildings have greatly reduced levels of ventilation due to the Building Regulations requirements (Part F) so this type of system is a must in ‘new-builds’ in order to exceed these requirements for both ventilation and energy efficiency.
How do Air Recovery Systems Work
The system works by means of a box shaped unit installed in the loft attic or garage which acts as a filtration system and heat exchanger.
It has a series of inlets/outlets connected to ducts. Two of these ducts transfer clean fresh air from outside into the building and the other two transfers stale used air from inside the building out including air from wet rooms (kitchens/bathrooms/utility rooms etc) having first extracted any heat which is freshened and recycled as either warm or cool air depending on the time of year.
A network of ducts link to a series of unobtrusive ceiling grills in the other living rooms deliver clean fresh ventilated air which can be warmed or cooled depending on the time of year.
Benefits of Air Recovery Systems
The obvious benefits of the system include reduced CO2 emissions, a saving on energy and draught free ventilation.
Additional benefits include the elimination of the causes of respiratory problems from air-borne allergies like dust mite which is good news for those who suffer from them and other problems associated with dampness or condensation from mould or mildew etc and this can also be eradicated by the retro fitting of this technology into existing buildings.
If you are a commercial user, the system qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA) which means that 100% of the cost can be offset against that years business tax liability and there is also a very tax efficient lease scheme by which to fund the purchase this technology subject to status
